Great Response to First Event in Hackley’s Professional Clinic Series

Over 140 young athletes participated in the free football clinic led by star strong safety Jamal Adams at Hackley School on October 23.

The clinic was open open to all interested area youth in grades five through nine. As an added bonus, linebacker Darren Lee also turned out for the event, and joined Jamal Adams in talking to the students.

At least as important as the practical skills training athletes gained was the thoughtful mentoring these professional athletes imparted. A fifth grader commented, "When Jamal Adams talked about being careful who you surround yourself with I realized I'm not doing that right now. I think I need a different group of friends if I'm going to do big things."

Another student said that "Seeing guys who are in the NFL talk about working hard, listening to your coaches, and never stop learning was awesome. Made me feel like I've been doing right thing."

Hackley Varsity Football coach Simon Berk noted, “It was so refreshing to see these professional athletes acting like kids and talking with the campers about their own lives and goals. Furthermore, having 140+ student-athletes, ranging from ages 8-14, from all different schools and backgrounds, playing football together with no care of the torrential rain or falling temps, goes to highlight the importance and power of team sports.”

This event was the first in a series bringing accomplished professionals to campus to work with students. The second event, on November 5, features basketball Hall of Famer Rebecca Lobo. Girls in grades 5-9 are invited to participate. To register, contact Jason Edwards at jedwards@hackleyschool.org.

The third event, scheduled for Spring 2019, will feature a professional performing artist.
