Mathematics

The Lower School math program strives to engage students to explore, collaborate, problem-solve, and reflect so that learning is meaningful and impactful.
The program provides a solid, sequential foundation using the Singapore Math program, which emphasizes mathematical thinking, math competency, and a visual approach to word problems to support student ability to build up to higher-level mathematics. Students as young as first grade begin learning multiplication and division; by fourth grade, students perform pictorial algebra using the bar model tool. The clear progression from concrete to pictorial to abstract enhances the students’ ability to learn. As students participate in mathematical activities, they learn to value mathematics, develop confidence in their mathematical abilities, become competent problem solvers, and learn to reason and communicate mathematically.
