The music program at Hackley is an integral component of the Lower School experience, promoting appreciation for music as a discipline and as a vehicle for personal expression.
Students explore singing, rhythmic development, and creative movement and are taught to identify such musical elements as rhythm, pitch, melody, and harmony as well as the study of musical notation and sight-reading. Students participate in chorus and learn to play Orff instruments and recorders, and have the option to further explore vocal singing as part of the Hack-Glee Club, to join a string instrument program beginning in third grade, or the band instrument exploration program in the fourth grade.
Students have many opportunities to perform, in plays and musicals designed to complement the academic curriculum as well as in school concerts and recitals. In addition, families may elect to enroll students in private music lessons through the Hackley Music Institute.
