On Monday, December 11, a group of 20 Middle and Upper School teachers from Guangdong Province visited Hackley while on a benchmarking trip to the United States. MS and US French Teacher Katherine Taylor was selected to present to her peers and colleagues in the Modern Language community in Nashville, TN. On December 12, Dr Samantha Rai and a senior resident at Phelps worked with 8th grade science students, teaching them how to correctly suture a wound. It was a fantastic experience for all involved and it gave the kids an insight into the actual practice of medicine in a hospital.

This week, students made winter ornaments out of dried orange slices and felted wool balls with acorn caps. The acorn caps came from the oak tree right outside the library.
Hackley third graders in 3S ended their Native American history unit by creating a presentation and researching a specific tribe of their choice. Working with Chrome books, they conducted guided research and created slides for presentations about each tribe, including where they live, how they live, and various characteristics that identify them. Meanwhile, next door in 3H, students wrapped up their unit by creating dream catchers.

We are proud and excited to announce that we will celebrate the opening of the Walter C. Johnson Center for Health and Wellness with the K-12 community on our first day back from Winter Break, Monday, January 8th! (Check out our video!). All students and employees will gather first thing in the morning for an inaugural ceremony -- what a great way to start the new year! Parents will be invited to tour the Johnson Center at our Open House held in conjunction with the Winter Sting on Friday, January 19 -- stay tuned for details!
In June 2017, Head of School Michael Wirtz challenged faculty and staff to begin considering the world that the incoming kindergarteners - the Class of 2030 - would face upon graduation from Hackley. With this conversation, Hackley laid the groundwork for the formation of the Strategic Planning Committee, a group of trustees, employees, parents, alumni and students who will consider, articulate and recommend the priorities for the coming years. In his Chapel Talk to Hackley seniors on November 29, Peter Sawkins (Director of Auxiliary Programs) challenged students to “start a conversation with [themselves] about the future,” embracing a thoughtful process of choosing a career path that answers to their values, interests and talents.
On Thursday, November 16th, Hackley hosted 40 teachers from all over NY for a conference on using games and simulations in the classroom, to outstanding results. Teachers had the opportunity to play a number of tried and tested games, hear presentations on the benefits of games as a form of pedagogy, and network with like-minded educators.
The Middle School’s Chinese 8 class were hosted by Ms. Mwakitawa’s 1st grade class for another round of Chinese language and culture learning. The Chinese 8 student teachers taught the first graders numbers, colors and basic greetings and are busy preparing their lesson plans for their next visit later this year.
The Columbia Scholastic Press Association has recognized The Vision, Hackley's Upper School literature and art magazine, as a Gold Medalist in the annual CSPA judging. The magazine earned "All Columbia Honors" in each of the three judging categories: Essentials, Verbal, and Visual. Led by senior editor-in-chief Josephine Sasso '17, the team of 12 Hackley 10th, 11th, and 12th graders set out to honor the creative talents of their peers, and this recognition is a credit to the entire staff as well as all the students whose work was featured. Congratulations!
The 2016-2017 Dial received a Gold Medal rating from Columbia Scholastic Press Association, with the “Essentials” category (which refers to all of the information that makes the newspaper reader-friendly and the coverage it contains) awarded All-Columbian Honors. For several years, Hackley has built a connection with the Community Food Bank of Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow that helps Hackley employees help the local community. This year, 53 Hackley faculty and staff donated turkeys so that local families could enjoy their Thanksgiving that much more. In addition, Hackley students and their families donated non-perishable packaged and canned goods to Neighborhood House in Tarrytown, which in turn distributed them to families and senior citizens in need. Happy Thanksgiving!

On Monday, November 13th, the Upper and Middle School chorus students visited the Lower School to teach a popular children’s playground song from Ghana, called Tue Tue. The K-12 collaboration involved partnering, and singing and clapping in a 3 part round. The students had a great time!
Twenty-three Hackley students have been selected to participate in All County, Area All State, and Conference All State groups. The Conference All State festival is held at Eastman School of Music in Rochester this November/December. The Area All-State Concert is Wednesday, November 16, 8:00 PM at SUNY Purchase. The 2017 motto for HGVS was "It Aint' Over, Til It's Over." That motto rang true in every game this season as numerous games were decided by either a single goal or came down to the wire. Their heart and determination to win was evident when the team came from behind to defeat the defending NYSAIS champion in overtime with a score of 3-2.
There has definitely never been a season quite like the one Boys Varsity Soccer experienced this year with so many incredible highs and a few excruciating lows.
The Varsity Field Hockey team had another strong season, winning the Ivy League Championship for the fourth straight year and for the fifth time in the past six seasons. The team also made an inspired run in the NYSAIS tournament, earning a second seed and coming up just short with a 3-2 overtime loss in the Championship game.
After a slow season start the team rallied behind the senior leadership of captains Javon Coleman, Sam Goldberg, Mike Hoffman, Chad Lasseter, and Will Waterhouse to go undefeated in October and win a second, consecutive Metropolitan Independent Football League championship.
The Hackley Girls Varsity Tennis Team had a fantastic season. Throughout the campaign, the girls demonstrated great tennis skills, unbelievable work effort, a desire to compete, a unifying team spirit, and excellent sportsmanship.
Under the leadership of a dozen Hackley seniors, and coaches Seth Karpinski, Dawn Crainer and Leila Braun, the cross country team experienced another great season of Invitationals including a Girls division three win and Boys 5th place finish at Somers. At the Brown Invitational the Boys came in 3rd out of 25 teams while the Girls took home 6th out of 21 teams.
On Saturday, November 4th, Hackley MS debate sent 25 students to debate at two separate locations – the Empire Division of the New York Debate League was hosted by Hackley and the Big Apple Division was hosted by the British International School of New York (BISNY).

Congratulations to Hackley Varsity Football for winning its second consecutive Metropolitan Independent Football League Championship. The team needed a win on Saturday and did so with a 38-24 win over previously undefeated (in league play) Fieldston School. Hackley has owned a share of the league championship in three of the four years since the league's inception. Channel 12 ran this interview on the team's great season.
Hackley Boys Varsity Soccer finished its season strong, earning the five seed in the NYSAIS championships. The team will play at The Masters School in the first round of NYSAIS on Wednesday, November 1st at Masters School at 2:30 PM.
Hackley Varsity Field Hockey claimed its fourth consecutive Ivy League Championship on Friday 10/27 with a 3-1 win over Fieldston. The team has had an outstanding year. The team received the two seed in the NYSAIS tournament and will host Riverdale in the first round on Wednesday, November 1st at 2:30 PM.
In Readers and Writers Workshop, 2F learned all about fables. The concise structure and language of fables allowed children to recognize predictable narrative structure and patterns and apply these to their own writing. (Read on...)
Congratulations to Fiona Boettner '19, Cosima Boettner '18, and Kit Greenberg '19, who earned spots in the NYSAIS tournament and played on Saturday, October 28 at Cary Leeds Tennis Center. Fiona received the four seed in the singles tournament, and made it to the semi-final round where she lost to the eventual tournament singles champion. Cosima and Kit were the three seed in the doubles tournament, and competed right through the finals, losing a tough three set match to the tournament doubles champions.
Members of Hackley's Third Grade and Kindergarten paraded across campus on Friday morning to learn about Mrs. Hackley on Founder's Day -- Mrs. Hackley's birthday. They visited (and hugged!) the old oak tree on the Quad, read about the early Hackley Headmaster who got stuck in it, saw Mrs. Hackley's portrait and learned about the history of Hackley School.
The centerpiece of the Hackley Upper School day on October 27 was the performance of "Defamation," a provocative and participatory dramatic production that challenges the audience to act as jury for a civil case built on a complex web of factors stemming from race, gender, class, religion and more.

If you’ve visited Hackley’s nature trails in the past few weeks, you might have noticed some new additions along the path. The small, black plaques dotting the trails are the fruits of the Trail Story project, brought to you by the Trail Story iGrant Committee (Tessa Johnson, Regina DiStefano, Mary Murray-Jones, and Emma Olsen) and Hackley students of all ages.
Hackley fourth graders became explorers as they used clues from their Explorer studies to solve a scavenger hunt. Each of four groups of students set off in pursuit of a different set of clues -- questions they needed to answer to find the next clue. Upon solving all the clues, they received a treasure chest filled with goodies.

Every year on October 27th, the Hackley Community gives a great big Happy Birthday Hurrah! to our founder, Frances Hackley, who was born on that day in 1820. The tradition of Founder's Day began in 1911 on the occasion of her 91st birthday. These days, we celebrate with a Hackley Spirit K-12 Dress Down Day...and birthday cake! Hackley MS students participated a second soup kitchen of the year on Saturday, October 21st, and it was another wonderful success. Our students took great initiative and were fully engaged in making it a great night for all.
On October 20, 28 students and three chaperones from Tamagawa School in Japan visited Hackley as part of our Round Square. This is the third consecutive year that Tamagawa students have visited Hackley. In past years, a Hackley student has gone to Tamagawa as an exchange student.
In library and technology classes, 4th graders have been studying infographics, a visual and pictorial representation of data or research. After learning infographics’ purpose and features, they worked in pairs to create one of their own. Students were given a fact and asked to create it first with colored pencils, then digitally on the computer. They iilustrated such fun facts as the % of diamonds used for industrial purposes vs. gemstones (80/20), and the top five spoken languages in the world (Chinese, Spanish, English, Arabic, and Hindi).
On Monday, October 17th, the fourth grade class took a trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. After reading a summer book titled The Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, the students explored the museum, led by the Lower School art teacher, to see first-hand the pieces and rooms described in this imaginative story.
Clink, clink, clink…that’s the sound of 6th grade science students rock hammering in the woods. Students are exploring the geology of Hackley’s campus by gathering rock samples from outcrops around campus and then observing and identifying them in class.
The Upper School hosted its second Maker Monday in the library on 10/16 and it was fun! The kids made mummies out of garden wire and muslin strips. One student even made a mummy black widow spider. Next Monday will be another Halloween project.

Beginning on October 4th with a 3-0 win over Fieldston, the Boys soccer team has recorded four straight wins to even up their record at 5-5-1. The Hackley community came together the second week of school to help the survivors of the many natural disasters that had enveloped the world in the preceding weeks. Many students, parents, faculty and staff worked together on a fund raising endeavor that encompassed all grade levels at Hackley. In all, our community was able to raise $4000 to send to those affected by the storms. Read on to learn how this came together.
UNITY, Hackley's Upper School diversity club, which seeks to create an inclusive, safe space in which to learn, celebrate culture, lean into discomfort, and bring awareness to our community, hosted its first event of the year on 9/28. A large, enthusiastic group of students and faculty came together to begin exploring this year's theme: Empathy.
On September 20, the Lower School held the first character education assembly of the year! The Lower School faculty highlighted all of this year's "virtues" as "Dorothy and friends" took a trip down the yellow brick road. Olivia Curran '19 competed in the International Triathlon Union (ITU) Sprint Age-Group World Championships in Rotterdam, Netherlands on September 17th, and finished 6th out of the field of 50 in the Women's 16-19 age group and 17th (out of 500) overall.

When my second child entered his senior year at Hackley, I began my 15th year as a Hackley parent. My boys and I were lucky to grow up on the Hilltop. The group of children who attend Hackley’s Lower School benefit from shaping influences – from their teachers and peers, as well as by way of community values – that set these students up to thrive.
Rohun Rajpal '18 has been accepted to Conference All-State Orchestra, and will perform in the festival held at Eastman School of Music in Rochester later this fall. Congratulations to Rohun!
Upper School Art teacher Mark Green's show of his latest paintings, "You Remember," which opened on September 6, runs through September 29 at the Gross McCleaf Gallery in Philadelphia, PA.
Upper School Art teacher Sarah Coble is working on the largest scale portrait sculpture she has ever undertaken -- a large section of a mural about George Washington Carver to be installed in the lobby of the Carver Center in Portchester. It is approximately 700 lbs. of clay, 7' high. She is currently glazing the pieces and hopes to install it this fall. The project is a commission for the Clay Art Center In Portchester.
Hackley Photography teacher submitted an image for the 37th Annual Spring Photography Contest, sponsored by the Photographer’s Forum magazine, and it has won honorable mention. The image will appear in the Best of Photography 2017, which will come out in the late fall. Congratulations!
On Monday, July 10, Hackley welcomed its second cohort of Hudson Scholars -- students from our neighboring Tarrytown school district who will particpate in academic enrichment programs led by Hackley faculty and student volunteers this summer. Last year's inaugural season was an unqualified success -- with the scholars, Hackley students, and faculty all coming away with new friendships and a great sense of community partnership. Hackley Review Summer 2017: By Suzy Akin P '12 P '14 -- “Teaching Astronomy during the day is dumb...I’d like to have all the kids bring sleeping bags to school so we could camp out on the football field, roast marshmallows, and study the stars.” Recognizing that a camp out on a school night might be impractical, Middle School science teacher Dan Lipin came up with a pretty great “Plan B.” He totally blacked out his classroom. Windows, doors, every source of light. And then he projected the stars on the ceiling while students stretched out on the floor.

Hackley Boys Golf coach Glenn Hasslinger has been named Coach of the Year by The Journal News. Glenn has done an incredible job with the Boys’ Golf program in his tenure, which this year went undefeated, claiming a second straight league title and the program’s first State Championship.
Onye Ohia- Enyia ’18 and LiliAnna Khosrowshahi '18 have earned All American honors for the Spring 2017 season. Will Ezratty '19 and Riya Mital '17 both earned All American recognition for Squash.
The Hackley School Boys 800 Meter Sprint Medley Relay Team made history this weekend breaking the emerging elite record at the New Balance Nationals running a time of 1:33.04.

The 2017 annual outdoor spring Chinese character writing competition was kicked off last week with strong performances by the Chinese 6 and 7 classes. 加油, 学生们!
Hackley kindergarten and 4th grades visited the Wolf Conservation Center in South Salem as a culmination to their ecology unit. They observed the four Ambassador Wolves in their enclosures, and even spied an elusive Mexican gray peeking out of its wolf habitat. Everyone agreed, though, that the best part was howling with the wolves!
Dr. David Gluckman, parent of Alex ’16, Josh ‘19 and Matthew ’25, visited this week with Hackley’s Independent Research class to discuss how his career path took him from medicine and science research to his current work in investment banking with a healthcare focus.
This year, Hackley Latin and Greek students once again competed with their peers across the US and around the world in a number of linguistic contests. Some of these occurred in the snowiest days of March, and we wondered whether they would take place at all!

Legendary Hackley science teacher Randy McNaughton passed away on May 25.The memorial service will take place on Saturday, June 24 at 10:00 AM in King Chapel, followed by a lunch in the Lindsay Room. The McNaughton family requests that memorial gifts be made to Hackley School to support faculty housing. Condolence cards may be sent to the family care of Margie McNaughton Ford '85 at Hackley. Earlier this spring, the 7th and 8th grade Visual Arts Majors visited The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Among the highlights were miniature prints by the recently rediscovered Dutch master Hercules Segers, which echoed the lessons students gained in their class unit on drypoint etching, a form of printmaking related to Seger's techniques, and carved marble sculptures of ancient Greek and Rome, which they appreciated in part because of the work don this year on ceramic relief portraiture partially inspired by ancient sculptures.

Upper School student Fletcher Levin '18 was recently the guest Chinese teacher in Ms. Bueso's 4th grade Spanish class. He provided the students with family related phrases and vocabulary in Chinese, continuing a inter-language teaching program started this year between Ms. Bueso's Lower School Spanish class and Upper and Middle School Chinese students.
On a cold and rainy day the Boys’ 4x800 meter relay team (Will Ballentine ’17, Will Crainer ’19, Fletcher Levin ‘18 and Onye Ohia-Enyia ’18) broke the Hackley School record on Tuesday that had stood for 6 years. The team ran a time of 8:21.68, beating the previous record set by Ian Parnell ‘13, Pietro Moran ’13, Luca Ameri ‘11 and Andrew Phillips ’11 (8:27.6) by over 7 seconds. Congratulations to the team and coaches for an outstanding performance in less than optimal conditions.
The Boys’ Golf team had another great season in 2017. The team won its second consecutive Ivy League title this season going undefeated in Ivy League play for a second consecutive year, and won the NYSAIS championship as well.
Hackley Boys Lacrosse has demonstrated the meaning of resilience this season. They faced injuries, tough losses, and a strong league on their way to defending their 2016 Ivy League title, finishing with a league record of 9-1 as Co-Champions with Riverdale.
The true measure of the Hackley Girls Varsity Golf team was revealed in the way they handled adversity, and through the tenacity, resolve, and growth the squad demonstrated throughout the 2017 season.
The Hackley Girls’ Lacrosse team had another successful season in 2017. Returning 17 players from our 2016 Ivy and NYSAIS Championship squad, and adding seven rookies into the mix, the team worked well together from the start.
Hackley Girls Track & Field continued its standard of excellence by finishing as runners up at NYSAISAA and securing a 3rd place finish at Ivy championships.
Hackley Softball built off last year’s season to go an impressive 10-8 in 2017. In addition to beating many opponents, the team won its second consecutive Hackley Softball Tournament title.

On May 25, Middle School students who participated in Community Service over the course of the year gathered for a group photo. It was exciting to see so many blue “Helping Hands” t-shirts peppering the hall and classes throughout the day! On May 21, forty members of the Hackley community pitched in to help clean Tarrytown’s Pierson Park down on the River. Two upper school students from HEAL, the environmental club, helped lead the charge with Rebecca Garfield, MS Community service co-coordinator, and they were thrilled with the turnout. What started as just another Tuesday yesterday ended with three Hackley athletics programs coming home with league titles. Congratulations to our Girls’ Lacrosse, Boys’ Golf and Boys’ Lacrosse, which claimed the league’s top prizes with victories.
On Friday, May 12, more than a dozen Hackley families gathered by the upper fields to participate in a day of service to the school. Students, teachers, and families representing all three divisions planted 250 white spruce trees in less than an hour!
On May 15, Hackley 5th graders gathered to watch the three class champion sumo bots wrestle each other for the championship trophy. The 5-3 robot built and programmed by Aniketh A. and Tyler G. was victorious -- check out the video!

On Friday, May 12, Hackley Lower School participated in our annual read-a-thon. Children were encouraged to read throughout the day within their classrooms. Several classes joined together to partner read. All proceeds from the read-a-thon are donated to REAP to benefit the Duha Complex School in Rwanda. Read on for details.
Matt Cooper '20 has been extraordinary this spring on the golf course. This past week, Matt posted nine-hole scores of 37,36,37 that helped lead the Hornets to wins over conference rivals Fieldston, Trinity and Horace Mann to keep the Boys’ Golf team undefeated. Matt currently has the lowest scoring average on the team. Congratulations Matt!

LiliAnna Khosrowshahi '18 scored her 100th career Hackley goal for the Girls Lacrosse team Friday evening, April 28 in the Hornets win over conference rival Horace Mann. The goal came 11:18 minutes into the game on Pickert Field in front of an enthusiastic Spring Sting home crowd. LiliAnna currently leads the team in scoring with 40 goals on the season.
Senior Ivie Uzamere broke her own school discus record this weekend bringing home top honors at the Clarkstown South Gold Rush Meet. With over 27 teams competing, Ivie not only broke her own school record by 8 feet but also broke the meet record as well. Her throw of 114’ 6” puts Ivie as one of the top throwers in the state.
Hackley 3rd grade students visited Ms. E.K. and Ms. Johnson's Advanced Biology classes to check in on the twelve duck eggs on Thursday. This was 3H's second visit to the Science Lab to compare and contrast the changes since their last visit. If the calculations are correct, we should see some hatching by Monday, May 1st. The Softball team had a great weekend posting resounding wins over Holy Child, 13-3 and Masters School 13-6 to win the Hackley School Softball tournament this past weekend.

On Saturday, April 15th, the Hackley’s MS Aquabots Robotics Teams competed in the PA Regional M.A.T.E competition, or the Marine Advanced Technology and Education competition, held annually at Villanova University.
Hackley 4th graders recently hosted their kindergarten buddies in the science lab and served as docents to help their buddies learn about artifacts borrowed from the International Wolf Center. The 4th graders previewed and researched the artifacts in science prior to their buddies' arrival, then guided them in discussions and answered their questions.
On Thursday, April 13th, the 4th graders visited the West Point Military Academy in conjunction with our studies of the Civil War. To help prepare for our visit, Mr. Kevin Kearns, P ‘24 and P ’22, visited the Lower School on April 10th.
Sixth-grade Spanish students created research-based posters in the theme "Ecuador: la mitad del mundo" for the annual AATSP poster contest. Two Hackley students, Welyn W. and Willow Q., received “certificates of participation” and another, Adelle D., won the Grades 6-8 category and was honored at a Gala in the city.
Kellsie Shan '20 was honored as a Grand Prix Winner of the Concert Festival International Competition sponsored by American Fine Art Festival organization. She had performed May (Starlit Night), composed by P.I.Tchaikovsky at Carnegie Hall.
On Sunday, April 9th, at 4:00 PM in Hackley's King Chapel, the Rwanda Education Assistance Project (REAP), a Hackley partner organization, will hold a screening and discussion of the documentary “The Uncondemned.” Contributions are voluntary. Funds raised will help Hackley's Rwanda partner school, the Duha Complex School, rebuild the library and classrooms destroyed in a violent storm in fall 2016. Read on for details.
Ivie Uzamere ’17 was selected First Team All Journal News this week in both the shot put and weighted throw for her outstanding accomplishments including placing 4th at the New York State Federation Championships. Onye Ohio-Enyia '18 was named First Team All County by the Journal news in the 300m. Amin Mustefa ’17 was named Second Team for Long Jump and Jordan Patrick ’17 was named Honorable Mention in the Weighted Throw.
On Thursday, April 20, Hackley will welcome 72 Middle School student delegates and 32 teachers from fellow Round Square schools around the world for the 2017 Round Square Conference of the Americas, seven days of celebrating connections across cultures.
Michael Bierut, father of three Hackley alumni (Liz ’04, Drew ’08, and Martha ’11), returned to the Hilltop to present this year's Forbes Lecture. An acclaimed graphics designer and partner in the New York design firm, Pentagram, Mr. Bierut spoke to Hackley Upper School students about the ways graphics design affects our lives in surprising and, often, transformative ways.
It was a wonderful year for Hackley swim teams with the Varsity Boys swim team completing an undefeated dual meet season and being crowned Ivy League champions, while the Girls finished in third place at the championship meet at Lehman College. This was the first Boys’ title since 2013. The team set a new record in the Boys’ 200 Medley Relay, and a new school and Ivy League record in the 400 Freestyle Relay.
Led by co-captains Andrew Chung and William Ballentine, Hackley Boys Basketball started this season with the energy and confidence of a championship team, and notched an impressive 8-2 record in the first 10 games.
Hackley Boys Squash, led by captains Wyatt Khosrowshahi, Salik Awan and Tucker van Eck, carved through this season with 10 wins out of ten meets, dropping only four out of the total 70 individual matches played.
Upper and Middle School students, faculty and staff had a chance to review renderings of various spaces in The Walter C. Johnson Center for Health and Wellness in a Grille Room display this week, including a construction update also shared with the community via email. Hackley Girls Basketball team started the 2016-17 season with a win at the Dan DiVirgillio tournament, and competed all season at a high level, as demonstrated by close games against 3rd ranked RCDS and 4th seeded Trinity.
Hackley Girls Squash finished the year with an impressive 12-4 regular season record and a 5th place finish in the US Squash Nationals (Division 2). Senior captains Riya Mital, Madison Chen, and Amanda Stern helped guide the team to one of the best seasons in recent memory.
Rohun Rajpal '18, violinist, has been accepted to Boston University's Tanglewood Institute (BUTI) for this coming summer. BUTI is recognized internationally as a premier summer training program for aspiring young musicians and is the only program of its kind associated with one of the world’s great symphony orchestras, the Boston Sympony Orchestra. Hackley Boys and Girls Indoor track team, with 37 students competing at 14 meets, both finished third at the Ivy Championship meet, and four athletes competed at the state level. Our athletes set eight new school records this season. Read on for details.
The Middle School Chinese Language Rapid Response Team (MSCLRRT) sprang into action this past week, working with Ms. Steinberg’s Lower School students on the Chinese portion of the song, “One World, One Dream.” They then moved into dumpling making this week, with tremendous support from Ms. Feng, a dumpling making expert, and Flik's Chef Lasseter and Ms. Aguilar-Gonzalez.
On Saturday, March 11th, Hackley sent 35 MS students to participate in our 4th regular season debate of the year. Hackley students competed at two separate locations, one in Queens and one in Brooklyn.
Despite having the smallest roster in recent years, Hackley wrestlers proved, time and time again, that they were just as fierce as they have always been, managing to win dual meets against Salesian, Stony Brook, and Hastings.
Middle School students again volunteered at the Fishes and Loaves Soup Kitchen in Ossining on 3/11. This month, they decorated the tables with beautiful laminated placemats prepared by Lower School students!
At Hackley’s 4th annual Lower School STEM Night on 3/9/17, Hackley parent Dr. George Yancopoulos, co-founder of Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, offered a keynote address to students and their families about the work scientists do and how they, through science, might one day serve as superheroes. Students and parents then participated in workshops led by Upper and Middle School students and explored 4th grade independent STEM projects on display -- a fantastic opportunity for the LS students to be inspired by fellow Hackley students.

On March 2, Hackley senior Jordan Patrick excelled in the The English Speaking Union Shakespeare NYC Branch Preliminary Competition, and advances to the NYC Branch finals on Friday, March 10th at the Morgan Library on Madison Avenue in NYC. Congratulations, Jordan!
Ms. Maddox’s Drama 5 classes recently presented four memorized Shel Silverstein poems for two Lower School classes! After the performance, the Lower School students were asked to join the actors on stage to pose in a tableau that they saw during the presentation and then join the fifth graders in a theatre game. During their unit on nonfiction, first graders were engaged in a cross curricular animal research project. Choosing an animal whose habitat includes our own Hackley campus, the students conducted research using books, information sheets prepared by Upper School students, and the Pebble Go database. Congratulations to the girls’ saber fencing team for their outstanding accomplishments this season including winning the ISFL league championships. Hannah Mark ‘18, Brooke Schwidel ’17, Katherine Lee ‘18, Rebecca Steinberg ‘20 and Cathy Fan ’19 all were vital to the team’s success. Four other squads also took home medals: girls’ foil (silver), boys’ foil and epee (bronze), and girls’ epee (bronze). Ten Hackley senior artists are participating in this year’s annual Katonah Museum Young Artists Exhibition. The exhibition features drawings, paintings, photography, digital work, sculpture and ceramics from senior artists from CT and NY-area high schools.
The Hackley Boys and Girls Track & Field teams both performed well at the Ivy League Championship meet at the Armory Center in New York City on Thursday, February 16. The Middle School Lego Robotics team, The Hackley Hornet Engineers, participated in the semi-finals of the regional FLL Lego robotics tournament at Poughkeepsie Day School.
On Saturday, February 11th, ten Middle School students volunteered at the fourth Loaves and Fish Soup Kitchen event of the year, located at the Trinity Episcopal Church on South Highland Avenue in Ossining.
Hackley Lower School students, teachers and parents spent the first weeks of Febraury participating in the Building Bridges program, which seeks to increase student awareness and understanding of people with different abilities; to provide first-person experiences that develop empathy and compassion; and to reinforce the belief that all people, no matter their differences, visible or invisible, have the same social emotional needs and feelings.
Twenty-five Hackley students in grades 7-12 earned a total of 36 awards (Gold Key, Silver Key, and Honorable Mention) in the regional 2017 Scholastic Writing Awards. According to Writopia Lab, the regional parter of The Alliance for Young Artists and Writers, “a panel of professional novelists, editors, teachers, poets, librarians, journalists, and other literary professionals selected these works from the 1,920 works submitted this year.”
On Thursday, February 2, the Lower School was thrilled to spend an interactive day with bestselling author and illustrator, Grace Lin. Students and faculty journeyed through Grace's childhood as she read passages from her award winning stories, were entertained by legends of the Chinese Zodiac, and created their own good luck drawings to take home.
Delia Tager '18 represented Hackley at the regional Poetry Out Loud competitoin at SUNY Purchase on 2/6, and after three rounds of poetry recitation,was named first runner up at the regional level. She will now compete at the state final in Syracuse, NY on Friday, March 10. Congratulations, Delia!

Students in the seventh and eighth grade Acting Intensive Performing Arts Major (co-taught by Merideth Maddox and Willie Teacher) recently completed a voiceover unit -- and produced wonderful results!
Hackley’s MS debate team sent 39 students to debate on January 28, earning a First and Second Place School Award at both events (total number of debate victories) and a Third Place Tournament Award (percentage of victories) at one of the events.
Hackley Review Winter 2016-16: By Suzy Akin P '12 P '14 -- Eight years into her tenure at Hackley, Middle School Drama teacher Merideth Maddox is enthusiastic about the program’s growth and momentum. “We just keep doing more and more, stepping beyond the circle of what we have done in the past, because we are excited about all we can do.” While always a source of enthusiastic participation, the Middle School Drama program has grown from a lively extracurricular activity to a focused, developmentally-rich program that gives Hackley students in grades five through eight the chance to experience drama and grow as theatrical performers over their Middle School years.

On 1/28, a team of six Hackley 3rd and 4th graders, coached by Stefanie Fisher and Regina DiStefano, presented at a Lego League Junior tournament at Sleepy Hollow High School.
The winter coffeehouse opened with a collaboration between students, teachers -- and alumni! Josh Greenzeig '16 (drums) returned to the Hackley stage to join Jackson Corrigan '17 (piano), Jamie Leonard '17 (guitar), Carolyn Miller '17 (voice), Lila Wolfe '17(voice), Izzy Ampil '17(voice), and Madi Schwartz '18(voice) in a performance of "Home At Last" by Steely Dan. Coffeehouse director Wade Tonken (red guitar) led the performance that featured music institute teachers Mike Mancini (bass guitar) and Scott Shachter (saxaphone). Watch the video here.
Seniors Winston Britton and Will Cotter were recognized by the Westchester Chapter of the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame for both athletic and academic excellence. Winston was subsequently recognized by the New York State Sportswriters Association for his performance this past fall on the undefeated Hackley Football Team.
A group of Hackley Upper School actors and musicians performed at Cedar Manor Nursing Home in Ossining on 1/25. This trip was organized by Samhitha Josyula '18, violinist and leader of the ArtsReach club at Hackley.
Six graders Advith, Ben, Steven, and Mateen played in the 2017 Greenwich City Scholastic Chess Championship at Greenwich Academy on Sunday, January 22, 2017. They brought home the 3rd place team trophy - a big accomplishment since many of them were playing more experienced players across grades 6 to 12. Go Hack!
On January 19, Daryl Homer, the 2016 Individual Olympic Silver Medalist in men's sabre and the first American in 112 years to win an individual sabre silver medal at the Olympic Games, spoke to Hackley fencers.
On Wednesday, 1/11/17 the Advanced Forest Ecology Research class had an adventure at the Teatown Lake Reservation Nature Preserve and Education Center. The weather warmed up briefly for students so there was fun to be had both inside and outside. Both classes first took a hike in the woods where they looked for signs of life.
This year, Hackley combined the annual Wendt and Szabo Lectures into a single meaningful program with a powerful, thought-provoking interactive exploration of “Climate Change: Science, Simulation and Policy,” which both challenged our community and honored a legacy of great teaching.
Fletcher Levin '18, a Chinese language student since 6th grade, has been selected to serve as a Student Ambassador for US-China Strong during the 2016 – 2017 school year, representing the organization launched by President Obama’s 100,000 Strong Initiative to help encourage young Americans to pursue China-related studies or careers.
On Tuesday January 10th, Martha Bierut '11 came back to the Hilltop to visit Upper School biology and Advanced Forest Ecology Research classes and discuss her path to becoming a research biologist in East Africa.
Taking advantage of the great opportunity at Hackley for collaboration between academic disciplines and across divisions, the Middle School Chinese program and the Lower School Spanish program are coming together to share the learning experience.
On January 11, Hackley Girls' Squash had a great win over visiting Sacred Heart. The boys team beat perennial power Packer Collegiate who boasts the number one player in the country. Congratulations to both teams!!
This past weekend Hackley Wrestlers started the season strong with excellent performances all around. Coach Stanek expressed his pride after the positive start saying “I am very proud of the way we wrestled.” The team went 3-1 on the weekend with wins over Salesian, Stony Brook, and Hastings. Even more impressive, Hackley won 16 and lost 4 of the actual bouts wrestled.
On the morning of Sunday, January 8th, a group of 10 students, along with Mrs. Louros and four parent volunteers, volunteered at the Food Bank of Westchester in Elmsford. The students packaged hundreds of bags of produce for the Senior Citizen Grocery Program throughout the county.
Hackley students continue their partnership with the Park Avenue School in Port Chester, NY, serving regularly as homework helpers in their K-5 after school program on Tuesday afternoons. The program had developed a loyal following of student participants who look forward to going back each Tuesday. Now in its second year, the program has led to many great encounters and ongoing bonds with the Park Avenue School students.
