Park Avenue School Homework Helpers

Hackley students continue their partnership with the Park Avenue School in Port Chester, NY, serving regularly as homework helpers in their K-5 after school program on Tuesday afternoons. The program had developed a loyal following of student participants who look forward to going back each Tuesday. Now in its second year, the program has led to many great encounters and ongoing bonds with the Park Avenue School students.
Tenth grader Isla Parton recently reflected, “Recently, when I went back for my second consecutive year at Park Avenue, the kids remembered me and were even more excited to see me and have me go to their art class (which is usually where I go at that time on Tuesdays). As well as a relationship with the kids, I have built a relationship with the teacher and am able to help her check, for example, each of the kids’ spelling on their homework. After leaving the classroom we head to art with Ms. Briggs where we spend most of the time while I am able to be there. We spend time doing projects that she has planned, but she is always lenient in letting kids decide what they would like to make on that given day. I had a great experience on my first day back this year when the kids were so excited to see me again that they wrote me cards and made me a poster thanking me for coming back!”
