Peter Latson, Director of College Counseling
Peter Latson’s journeys as student, teacher, coach, counselor and administrator have taken him to a small liberal arts college in Minnesota, a Semester at Sea, a large state university in Texas, and independent schools in Brooklyn, Boston, Honolulu, and Tarrytown.
Peter holds a B.A. in Spanish from a small Midwestern college and an M.A. in Spanish from a large Southwestern university. After earning his M.A., Peter taught Spanish and coached soccer at Poly Prep Country Day School (Brooklyn, NY) and, later, at Concord Academy (just outside of Boston). In 1987, Peter began his college admissions career at Macalester College, where he eventually reached the position of Associate Director of Admissions. After his stint at Macalester, he returned to the high school side of the admissions desk, at Punahou School in Honolulu, where he eventually became Director of College Counseling.
In 1997, Peter, his wife, and their two small boys relocated from Hawaii to Tarrytown (a move which immediately put Peter’s judgment into question) to become enthusiastic Hilltop denizens. Peter has been directing or co-directing Hackley’s College Counseling Office since then and served also as Assistant Director of Hackley’s Upper School for twenty years. Peter’s boys, Ben and Will, both graduated from Hackley (’08, ’10) and now live in Portland, Oregon. Peter’s hobbies include sailing and singing, the latter mostly out of earshot. His favorite thing about counseling? Helping his counselees realize their own strengths.
