It's a win for HGJVT!
It was a banner day for the HGJVT team as the girls celebrated their first win of the season against The Masters School. Never having played Masters before, we were not quite sure what to expect; however, it was clear to see after the first few games that our players brought their A game and saw an opportunity for a win. It was solid tennis from the start of each match and our players never let up on their level of intensity and strong, aggressive play. Emmy dispatched of her opponent quickly and showed what success looks like when playing with a purpose. It was great to see her mixing it up by playing a steady baseline game, but also charging the net when the opportunity presented itself. Dylan and Roya also had a quick win and it was clear to see their opponents could not figure out what to do. With Roya at the baseline hitting her steady shots, Dylan set herself up beautifully to attack at the net when the time was right. This dynamic duo was so in sync, and it was a real treat to see them win so decisively. Sam and Olivia played together for the first time and had no problem playing off of each other's strength. Sam is clearly happy hitting winners from the net and all the more fun if it is an overhead. Olivia showed her own skills at the net returning balls that were not easy to hit. Both girls showed great tenacity in closing out the second set when it looked like Masters was staging a come back. Emily and Simone in third doubles brought home the final win of the day. Each played beautifully and with a true desire to win. With Simone in the back court and Emily up at the net, there was little chance of their opponents finding a weak spot. Simone hit groundstroke after groundstroke with no sign of letting up and Emily took advantage of every opportunity to put the ball away at the net. Our fourth doubles team was the dynamic duo of Ella and Helen who played together for the first time. It was one of the more exciting matches to watch simply because Ella and Helen were clearly not going to give up and gave it their all. Although it goes down as a loss in the score book, it was a win on so many other levels. The first set went to a tie-breaker and the second set was another nail biter. Both girls played with a purpose and made their opponents work for every point. This wrap up would not be complete without giving Becky a proper shout out for coming to watch her teammates play. We eagerly anticipate her return to the courts and to our next match on Wednesday against Fieldston. Way to go Hack!
