Ilyasah Shabazz '79 discusses childhood as a daughter of Malcolm X

The Michigan Humanities Council’s 2017 Great Michigan Read program chose Ilyasah Shabazz ‘79’s book, “X: A Novel” as its selected book of the year. Before Shabazz spoke at Michigan State University in celebration of the program, she gave an interview to elaborate on her childhood as a daughter of Malcolm X.

Her speech was given in the very same room at Michigan State University where her father spoke in January 1963. There are many stories about the early years of Malcolm X that the general public is aware of, including his being burned out of his house in Lansing, Michigan as a child, but Shabazz makes it very clear that there was much more to him than what is written in the history books. In her writings, Shabazz tackles the many discrepancies between what history says about Malcolm X and what her own family and experiences reveal about her father.
