Fall Season Update: Boys Soccer
There has definitely never been a season quite like the one Boys Varsity Soccer experienced this year with so many incredible highs and a few excruciating lows.
With only nine players returning from the 2016 campaign, the season started a bit rough with a 0-3-1 record. Once the team recorded its first victory (1-0) against eventual NYSAIS champion Trinity, the season turned for the Hornets.
The team got on a roll winning five out of six matches before running into Riverdale and Trinity, the top two teams in the conference. Despite the two game setbacks, the team rallied to finish the season 3-0-1 in their last four games. The overall regular season record of 8-6-2 earned the team a well-deserved #5 seed in NYSAIS. Despite a very spirited effort and a late push, HBVS came up short against Masters (#4) in the tournament quarterfinals.
It was a very strong season given all the new faces and young players called upon to play major roles, including three freshmen who started regularly – Samson Bennett, Luca McAdams and J.B. Rosenthal (4 assists). Defensive standout Ian Jacobson ’18 was a pillar of strength anchoring the defensive line. For his efforts, Ian was named 1st Team All-Ivy. Upfront, Matt Braver ’19 (18 goals, 7 assists) and Andrew Tang ’19 (9 goals, 5 assists) provided the scoring punch. Both received 1st Team All-Ivy honors. Defender Patrick Wertimer ’19 and goalie Patrick Schulman ’20 were also recognized with 2nd Team All-Ivy and All-Ivy Honorable Mention honors respectively.
