Peter Smith '91 Performs and Visits With Students on the Hilltop

Hackley alumnus Peter Smith '91, jazz pianist, composer, arranger, singer and recording artist, returned to the Hilltop in November to perform for the Hackley community and spend some time with students in the jazz combo class.

Mr. Smith spent an evening playing the piano in Allen Memorial Hall and even jammed with performing arts faculty member and recording artist Dr. Rafi Malkiel. The next day, Mr. Smith visited Dr. Malkiel's jazz combos class. He spoke about his experience as a Hackley student many years ago; his journey as a musician, composer, arranger and musical director for well-known artists in the West Coast music and television scenes; and his current successful career as a jazz artist.

Mr. Smith also played for the students and provided them with ideas and examples of jazz piano techniques and improvisation approaches. He listened to the students play as a group and played the piano with them. Then he and Dr. Malkiel offered feedback and points to consider for further development of the students' skills and ensemble playing.

Mr. Smith complimented the students for their level of playing and achievements, and he shared kind words of encouragement for them to continue playing and growing as musicians. The students were excited and appreciative of the invaluable time spent with a kind, knowledgeable and experienced artist.
