The real Hackley Hornets are back!

For the second straight game, the 2009 Hackley Varsity football squad was at full strength and the result was another victory. On a chilly Saturday evening on Long Island, the Hornets displayed a high powered offense along with a superior defense that combined to dominate a solid Long Island Lutheran team, 26-6.

The game began with what has become a familiar formula in Hackley victories this season – the defense forcing an opponent’s early turnover. This time, it was junior Marquis Wilson slapping the ball away from the Long Island Lutheran’s quarterback on the second play of the game. Marquis then grabbed the ball and took off to the end zone for a TD. Two minutes into the game, the Hornets were leading 6-0.

Later in the first quarter, sophomore Adam Parker took a handoff and broke through the Long Island defense, breaking a tackle and sprinting past their other defenders, running for a 69 yard TD, his longest of the season. Lutheran was able to score a TD in the second quarter but that was all the scoring the Hornets were going to allow on this night.

In the third quarter, Parker scored two more touchdowns. He finished the game with 173 yards on the ground on 17 carries to go along with his three touchdowns. The Hackley defense, led this evening by Captains Steve Del Moro, Jack Houghteling, and Darnell Davis, along with Marquis Wilson wreaked havoc all through the game. The Hackley defense now has allowed only one touchdown in its last two games.

This weekend’s final game is set for Saturday against Kingswood Oxford. It is also Senior Day and, as the last game in many of the players’ high school careers, it promises to be a memorable day…and game.
