Pianist and Composer, David Ecker ’10 releases new EP

David Ecker ’10
releases his latest EP “Passage”, a culmination of an intense year of musical exploration, composition, and production. While it’s pianistically rooted in Jazz, it features a variety of electronic influences and doesn’t shy away from messing with genre expectations.

David, who has played jazz piano for 14 years and attends Columbia University, recently returned to the hilltop to perform with Erick Storkman and Elliot Smith at Erick’s tribute concert on Alumni Day. You can find the Facebook page for the “Passage” release here and Ecker’s Bandcamp page here.

David Ecker ’10
releases his latest CD “Passage”, a culmination of an intense year of musical exploration, composition, and production. While it’s pianistically rooted in Jazz, it features a variety of electronic influences and doesn’t shy away from messing with genre expectations. David says, “jazz is a genre that has produced some of the most innovative textural elements and sounds but it often, in my opinion, lacks memorable melody. My goal for this project was to incorporate my love for jazz melody and harmony with the sonic adventurousness of electronic music.”

David Ecker ’10 has been playing jazz piano for 14 years and attends Columbia University where music and jazz continue to figure prominently in his life. He released his jazz EP Kind of Solo in August 2011, in which he wrote and played all instruments featured on the 4 new compositions. David describes the tracks as "an emotional blend of jazz and folk." He is the Columbia Spectator’s music columnist and interns at The Lincoln Center. David studied jazz piano from Joyce Dicamillo and while at Hackley he played in area workshops such as the Stamford Young Artist Jazz Band and the SUNY Purchase Summer Jazz Institute. David is majoring in history.
