Faculty Feature: Dr. Rigby

Even in the midst of having a new baby, Dr. Lauren Rigby continues to perform cello professionally, gigging with her quartet and pianist Pilley Bianchi, creator of Bianchi Musica.

Primarily classical musicians, Bianchi Musica performs a very wide range of genres, appearing throughout the NYC area, Rome, Italy, Mexico City, Jackson Hole, New Orleans, Newport, and St. Barth's in the Caribbean.  The group, which performs almost weekly in the summer and fall, collaborated on solo and chamber music recitals as well as film music, creating improvised music for the film, "Fully Awake."

The film is a documentary exploring the artistic and educational innovations at Black Mountain College where such experimental artists as John Cage and Merce Cunningham lived and worked.

Dr. Rigby has performed live and in the studio with a wide range of artists including Duncan Sheik, John Benitez, Deni Bonet and her husband, saxophonist Jason Rigby, who was recently nominated for yet another Grammy.

In 2010, Dr. Rigby completed her PhD from NYU, where she conducted research exploring issues of musical identity with classically trained cellist- improvisers and how these cellists resisted the hegemony of classical music indoctrinated in conservatory training.

Dr. Rigby has headed the strings program at Hackley since 2011. Under her leadership, the groups are playing at advanced levels and drawing increasingly larger crowds to their concerts. The next Chamber concert is scheduled for April 23.
