Hilltop visit with Martha Bierut '11

On Tuesday January 10th, Martha Bierut '11 came back to the Hilltop to visit Upper School biology and Advanced Forest Ecology Research classes and discuss her path to becoming a research biologist in East Africa.
During  a semester abroad program in Kenya, Martha learned various field methods including scat identification, and was inspired to come back and learn more. Martha then became a Princeton in Africa Fellow and worked in Uganda doing environmental education about living with elephants and other wild animals.

Martha’s next and current job is working with a university to research the Hamadryas baboon in Ethiopia. This is her most intense field experience yet as she lives in a tent and has to take bucket or waterfall showers from the hot springs. The research is focused on the behavior of these baboons and how hormonal levels change in response to stress.

Martha was a great speaker and had several amazing pictures to share and many crazy stories tell. We can’t wait to hear what she is doing next.
