Olympic Fencer Advises Hackley Fencing Team
On January 19, Daryl Homer, the 2016 Individual Olympic Silver Medalist in men's sabre and the first American in 112 years to win an individual sabre silver medal at the Olympic Games, spoke to Hackley fencers.
Mr. Homer used a video of his silver-medal performance as a vehicle to talk students through both the physical and cerebral challenges of fencing. In addition to pointing out and discussing elements of effective technique, he talked about the importance of nimble strategy, of focus, and of recognizing that being nervous is normal, even as athletes must see beyond that to focus on winning.
Daryl Homer is currently ranked No. 2 in the USA and No. 8 in the world. Other outstanding accomplishments include a silver medal at the 2016 USA Fencing National Championships ( Division I), a silver medal at the 2015 World Championships; five time gold medalist, a silver medalist, two time bronze medalist at the Pan American Fencing Championships; four time NCAA All American; individual bronze medalist at the 2007 Cadet World Fencing Championships: individual bronze medalist at the 2009 Junior World Championships and team bronze medalist at the 2009 Junior World Championships.
