MS Debate Update

Hackley’s MS debate team sent 39 students to debate on January 28, earning a First and Second Place School Award at both events (total number of debate victories) and a Third Place Tournament Award (percentage of victories) at one of the events.
Highlights of the day included a 5th grade team that went undefeated at 5-0 and earned second place in the tournament (Jad B., Aniketh A., and Robbie G.), multiple 4-1 teams that earned team awards, and several top speaker awards, including a second place showing by Sabrina F. in a tough field that included some of the top MS debaters in the New York area.

We had an almost equal number of 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade teams who competed over the course of the day.

All of our debaters worked hard to prepare for the 4 topics debated that day, including topics about whether the US should halt the construction of oil pipelines, abolish Native American Reservations (or allow Native Americans to use natural resources on their land), whether Pokemon Go does more good than harm and whether Globalization does more good than harm.

Special thanks to Mr. Maisonet for coaching the students at IS5 and all the parents who volunteered to judge, especially Polly Schneck and Torrie Pizzolato and the parents who helped with the pizza setup and who opened the Tuck at Hackley. We were also fortunate to have Neil Singh and the other US students who helped run tab and judge for the day. It was another solid day for MS debate!

Our next tournament will be held on March 11th at multiple venues in NYC.
