Debate Program Continues to Grow
The Tri-State High School Public Debate program, a Parliamentary debate league founded and anchored by Hackley, held its third tournament of the season at Horace Greeley High School in Chappaqua.
In addition to Horace Greeley, Fox Lane HS, Somers HS, Wilberforce School, An-Noor Academy, Darul Arqam school, and Rising Star Academy, all competed in 4 rounds of debate. The pre-announced motions were:
- The Dakota Access Pipeline does more good than harm
- The US Should cooperate with Russia in Syria
The two impromptu topics were:
- Elected officials should be removed from office for making knowingly false statements
- Students should be required to pass Civics to graduate from High School
Hackley debaters included Max Tannenbaum, Jack Rosenthal, Matt Traum, Liam Gonick, Kireeti Josyula, Alex Evangelidis, along with 8th graders Sabrina F. and Charlize H.
Both Max Tannenbaum (3rd place) and Liam Goninck (5th place) earned speaker awards. Overall, Hackley earned second place as a school in both the school award (total number of debate victories) and tournament award (percentage of debates won).
The highlight was having the young debate team of Charlize H., Alex E., and Sabrina F., winning the overall competition against a team of experienced older classman from the Wilberforce school.
The league continues to grow as we find new schools from Westchester to join. All US students interested in trying debate are welcome to attend.
The newly formed HSPDP league will hold its 4th event on April 8th at Norwalk Community College in Connecticut. The Championship tournament will be held on April 23rd in Claremont, California.
