Building Bridges: Understanding People with Different Abilities
Hackley Lower School students, teachers and parents spent the first weeks of Febraury participating in the Building Bridges program, which seeks to increase student awareness and understanding of people with different abilities; to provide first-person experiences that develop empathy and compassion; and to reinforce the belief that all people, no matter their differences, visible or invisible, have the same social emotional needs and feelings.
A different type of ability is highlighted at each grade level. Our kindergarteners receive an overview of vision impairment, hearing impairment and physical disabilities; first graders learn about blindness/vision impairments; second graders learn about deafness/hearing impairments; third graders learn about physical impairments; fourth graders learn about learning differences/disabilities.
The children have already had the opportunity to participate in hands-on simulation activities in the classroom and each class, Kindergarten through 4th grade will attend an assembly which introduces them to engaging speakers who provide personal, real-life perspectives on the grade level subjects. It has been an incredible time for all!
