MS Debate Update
On Saturday, March 11th, Hackley sent 35 MS students to participate in our 4th regular season debate of the year. Hackley students competed at two separate locations, one in Queens and one in Brooklyn.
Continuing their strong performance all year long, Zach Y., Zara Y., and Sid S. won the very competitive Empire Division tournament at the Garden School with a perfect 5-0 record. Three other Hackley teams went 4-1 at that event which resulted in a 1st and 2nd Place trophy for total number of wins and percentage of wins. A number of Hackley debaters were in the top ten overall speakers.
At the other event in Brooklyn at the East New York Middle School of Excellence, our 5th and 6th graders continued to learn and grow as debaters. The fifth grade team of boys, Robbie G., Jad B., and Aniketh A. kept up their winning record, going 3-2 while multiple other teams earned wins on the following issues which were debated at both events:
- 1 NYC should remain a sanctuary city.
- 2 Provide free childcare to teenage parents.
- 3 U.S. should halt construction of new oil pipelines.
- 4 Ban advertisements for alcohol.
Special thanks to Mr. Maisonet who coached the 5th and 6th graders, Neil Singh (who serves as Tournament Director for the Empire League), and Polly Schneck (MS debate parent liaison) for helping out in various capacities for the day.
Also, a big thanks to all those parents who drive and judge and support the program – whose voluntary aid has literally made Hackley's support of these tournaments possible since the program's inception-- almost 60 MS students competed in a debate tournament this season!
The next MS debate event is Saturday, April 22nd and will be held here at Hackley!
