Hackley Community Raises Funds for Hurricane Relief

The Hackley community came together the second week of school to help the survivors of the many natural disasters that had enveloped the world in the preceding weeks. Many students, parents, faculty and staff worked together on a fund raising endeavor that encompassed all grade levels at Hackley. In all, our community was able to raise $4000 to send to those affected by the storms. Read on to learn how this came together.
The LS students worked together to create handmade signs promoting a fun raffle at the Sting. Student volunteers helped sell raffle tickets for a chance to win one of four baskets of prizes. Parents, students and teachers worked together to raise funds for hurricane victims throughout the country.

A handful of seventh and eighth graders came out to the Fall Sting on that beautiful, sunny afternoon to fundraise for the victims of recent hurricanes by face-painting and providing temporary Hackley Hornet tattoos to our students. A big thanks to the HPA for donating all of the material used to make this fundraising activity a reality.

On Thursday, Oct. 5th, MS students gathered together with helping hands to assemble emergency hygiene kits for children and adults affected by the recent hurricane in Puerto Rico. We thank Teen Works for donating all of the items to prepare the kits, and our 8th grade student, Emily Rossman, for spearheading this event. It was a great opportunity for students to give back to those in need at this time, and we are sure the kits will be greatly appreciated by those receiving them! Additionally students and teachers interested in helping the survivors of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma stopped by Allen Hall after First Friday activities on September 8, 2017. They assembled toiletry kits that will be sent to people in need.

Community Council spent the weekend before Spirit Week baking many goods. On the Monday of Spirit Week, which coincided with September 11th, we had decided to call that day Community Day. To that end, Council held a bake sale for hurricane relief where we raised $475.

Other upper school students ran another bake sale on the day of the Fall Sting. Thanks to the tasty donations by many community members and the gift of time by upper school students, the second bake sale was also a great success.

The students that volunteered their time to make the fundraiser a success voted on where the proceeds should be sent. In the end, it was decided that the money should be split between Direct Relief and Global Giving, two highly rated organizations that help people around the world.
