The Catacombs: A Show of 38 Charcoal Skull Studies

Students in Mrs. Carrier's 7th & 8th grade minor class studied the chiaroscuro techniques developed by European Renaissance master painters. (Read on...)

They learned how to create the
illusion of volume and depth in their drawing using shadows, highlights and a range of values. They learned basic observational measuring techniques and the proportions of the human skull. They used charcoal and kneaded erasers working to make these as accurate as possible. This study is in preparation for their self-portraits, giving students a clearer understanding of the structure of the head.

The gallery will be open during regular school hours for the rest of this week. The students showed impressive efforts to create this show and we hope you can stop by to view their work!
