Adam Kahn '00 Shares Research on Emerging Technologies with ISRP Students

Adam Kahn 00, Associate Professor of Communication Studies at California State University, Long Beach, returned to the Hilltop last week to meet with Independent Science Research Program students and to fete his 25th reunion at Alumni Day last weekend.

Professor Kahn shared his inspiring journey with our young researches, discussing how he persevered through various hardships, including not getting accepted to research programs as a high school student or after college. He did, however, make the best of the experiences he did have to learn about the intersection of communications and technology. Professor Kahn also shared insights from his current research in understanding the social and cognitive psychology of emerging technologies, such as virtual reality, social media, and video games.

Our students found his message of resilience particularly meaningful. One student reflected: The reason why I point this out is because it acts as a nice reminder that setbacks are a part of the research process and can be used to fuel growth in the future.

Another student added: I believe his story is even more empowering because he acknowledged and even emphasized the setbacks he faced.

Students were also fascinated by the research itself, with one noting: It was fun to learn about the concept of 'awe' and its effects on generosity. It was also intriguing to learn how this 'awe' effect can be created through virtual reality and artificial environments.
