Hackley Debate Program Kicks Off Upper School Season

Hackley Debate has had a strong start to the Upper School season.

Kicking off with the Yale Invitational, held online from Sept. 20 to 21, four teams represented Hackley: Maxwell Michael 27 and Lilly Rosenthal ’27, Theodore Anderson ’27 and Gabriel Fossner ’27, Nico Kim ’27 and Shreyas Kuniyil ’28, and Rohan Monday ’29 and Zaira Sammi ’28. All teams performed solidly, each earning two wins over the weekend in a highly competitive national field — an encouraging start to the season.

The following weekend, from Sept. 27 to 28, Hackley competed in the NYPDL tournament hosted by Friends Seminary. Representing Hackley were Ryan L. ’30 and Norah Mott ’29, Scarlett Civale ’29 and Leena Sheikh ’29, Maxwell Michael ’27 and Hilah Shklarski ’28, and Lilly Rosenthal ’27 and Jordan Silverman ’29. A standout performance came from Lilly and Jordan, who broke to the Novice Semi-finals — a notable achievement and an especially impressive debut for Jordan in her first-ever debate tournament. It was also a phenomenal debut for eighth grader Ryan L. in his first-ever high school event.

Students interested in competing should remember to sign up for upcoming events.
