Fall Clean Up: A K-12 Partnership

Right after Thanksgiving, students of all ages and teachers from all divisions participated in Hackley’s First Annual Nature Trail Clean Up Marathon. Students and teachers worked tirelessly for three days to rake, prune and re-line the G. Carl Buessow Nature Trails.
The Hackley Forest responds to colder weather and shortening days with a burst of color and cascade of leaves -- which, while beautiful and a key resource in the forest, make finding your way through the nature trails confusing!

Additionally, students mapped the trails, calculating distances to be displayed on upcoming maps. Buildings and Grounds also installed a new Welcome Center.

Across all ages, students found the physical effort involved rewarding and renewing. Students were excited to work with other grades and make connections across our K-12 school -- a highlight was the partnership between Upper School Advanced Forest Ecology Students with members of the Kindergarten, who then all had lunch together in the Upper School dining room.

Students expressed a sense of ownership and pride clearing trails for future forest learners.
