LS Students Compete in Lego Tournament

On January 20, two teams represented Hackley Lower School at a First Lego League Junior tournament in Chappaqua. The theme this year was Aqua Adventures, and teams were required to learn about water use and conservation.  Read on.
Our teams each selected a water use, followed the water’s journey through that use, selected a part of the journey that could be improved, and designed a way to improve it. They then built Lego models depicting the water use and their invention.

Our team of 4th grade boys, nicknamed the Hackley Tridents, chose to explore irrigation on a farm. Concerned with contaminated water runoff, they built a model showing a runoff ditch with a filtration system which would feedback into the farm’s irrigation system. Their model included a motorized tractor used to irrigate the fields and a second motor powering the filtration system.

The Hackley Aqua Builders, a team of 3rd and 4th grade girls, selected snowmaking as their water use. They learned about the strain snowmaking can put on the water supply near a ski resort, and developed an idea for a collection basin for rain and snowmelt which could feed into their resort’s snow guns. Their model included a motorized snow maker and water filtration system attached to their collection basin.

Both teams presented their models, as well as posters outlining their research and designs, to a panel of judges and a large audience. They fielded questions about their prototypes, the design process, and their experiences as a team. Both teams made an impressive showing.
