Adventures in MS Art

Check out the great stuff our Middle School Art students are exploring!
Mary Funchion’s & Mary Stapleton’s kindergarten class has been learning the art of printmaking under the tutelage of a class of Monica Carrier’s 7th grade art minors. The 7th graders have been honing their printmaking skills for the last month in the middle school art studio and are now discovering their true understanding through the art of teaching what they have learned! The classes divided into teams of two or three students and shared their knowledge with the enthusiastic kindergarten students. They will continue to develop their printmaking projects together as the younger students develop their concepts and techniques under the instruction of their more experienced student teachers. So far, there is a creative energy and joyful rapport among the two classes. Stay tuned for the upcoming results of their work together.

The 7th and 8th grade visual art majors visited The Metropolitan Museum of Art, along with their teachers, Thomas Chin, Sarah Coble and Monica Carrier. The students were able to study the work of Michelangelo in person in the exhibition the New York Times called, "The must-see show of the season … an art historical tour de force", including a painting the master crafted when he was the students’ age. Other highlights of the trip included the sculpture of one of the forefathers of modern sculpture, Rodin and a contemporary master, David Hockney’s paintings. Both Rodin and Hockney were strongly influenced by artists of the European Renaissance, including Michelangelo, bringing the highlights of the visit full circle for the students.
