Traditions Live On!

We often say here at Hackley that once something happens twice, it's a tradition. But some traditions have much deeper roots -- among them, the longstanding commitment to learning Shakespeare in the Upper School.  Students of the legendary late Arthur Naething (he of the resonant words "Go forth and spread beauty and light") from the 1960s through the mid-1990s know that deep study of Shakespeare was the bedrock of the Senior English course, and many can still recite Hamlet's "To be or not to be" soliloquy from memory.

On the Hilltop these days, students still study Shakespeare, and they perform it too--competing in the annual English Speaking Union Shakespeare competition. Students are rated on accuracy as well as power of expression. This year Hackley's top performer, Kioni Marshall '18, who went on to win at the New York semi-final level and to compete  in the New York State finals.  Here's a lively snippet of this year's campus competition.
