Congratulations to the MS Aquabots!

On May 12th, the MS Aquabots club competed in the Marine Advanced Technology and Engineering regional competition (MATE), held at Villanova University. This is Hackley’s fourth year competing, and once again the MS represented Hackley well. Read on.
This competition has students design, build, and test submersible remotely operated vehicles, or ROVs, against other schools in missions designed to mimic the real life uses of ROVs. Teams are judged on several criteria, including the design and demonstration of their ROVs, the sales presentation and Q&A done by judges of industry experts, and their overall performance.

The 7/8 grade team, HACK.E.R.S, had a dramatic start to the competition, as technical difficulties caused several last minute changes to the remote of their ROV. As the students presented their ROV to the judges at the start of the competition during the Safety Compliance Check, the team was informed of changes that would have to be made to the circuit of their remote and their remote box in order to pass compliance and even compete. The team had a limited time to solve this significant problem. The 7/8 graders shined as they took a stressful situation and creatively thought of solutions to pass their remote and driving system through compliance. The judges were so impressed with the positivity and cooperation among the group, that HACK.E.R.S was awarded a trophy in Spirit and Sportsmanship.
The 6th grade team, WHIRLPOOL, equally impressed the judges with their Product Sales Presentation. The team was not fazed by presenting their ROV, as a company, to the judges, and the judges were drawn by their knowledge, humor, and creativity. WHIRLPOOL earned third place in PRODUCT PRESENTATION, which the judges remarked was a highly competitive category.

Congratulations to the MS Aquabots for another great year at the MATE competition!
