The Talking Drum
Hackley Lower and Middle School students enjoyed a performance by Joakim Lartey, a drummer and storyteller from Ghana.
Mr. Lartey talked to the MS students about the instruments and invited several different groups up to play with him. He was in the middle of the story of "How the Leopard Got its Spots," describing how fire grew and grew when he left his house for the very first time on his way to dinner at leopard’s house...when the actual fire alarm went off on campus and everyone had to proceed outside! Such is the power of the talking drum! Though Mr. Lartey's visit with the Middle School was therefore cut short, the students will never forget it.
Lower School students learned about "How the Tortoise Got the Cracks on its Shell" as Mr. Lartey Joakim shared how he learned to listen to the talking drum's message. He introduced other drums before inviting students to play.
