Middle School English Teacher - Leave Replacement

Hackley School seeks a full-time leave replacement for a Middle School English teacher for the remainder of the 2018-2019 academic year to begin in mid-January. This position will primarily involve teaching grades 6 and 8.

The preferred candidate will have a BA in English, suitable independent school experience, and a passion for working with students in the middle and upper school grades. He or she will excel at teaching grammar and multiple writing strategies. The candidate will foster a deep love for reading and help students develop strategies that enable them to enjoy and understand works of literature. The preferred candidate will be comfortable with a variety of genres across a wide range of periods and national origins and will excel in helping students learn to decode, interpret, and appreciate texts from short stories or poems to contemporary classics. Finally, ideal candidates will deploy a range of instructional techniques and media to maximize engaged student learning and will be excited to explore pedagogically appropriate uses of technology.

Candidates should understand and promote the academic, social, and emotional growth of adolescents; be willing to work collaboratively with peers both in English and other departments; be willing to serve as an advisor to middle school students; be willing to leave detailed reports about student performance and behavior for the returning teacher; and be able to act with wisdom and a deep, abiding sense of humor.
