Building Communities...By Hand

First graders learned about different communities through a hands-on building project. Students selected specific buildings within a community: urban, suburban, and rural, to paint and build.
After buildings were painted, students added windows, awnings, labels, fences, playgrounds, and crops. With the help of a first-grade parent who is an architect, we learned about scaling building, trees, and cars to size. Students even used rulers to measure their buildings to get the number of windows just right! Students also focused on community features like grasslands, trees and farms to make the communities look realistic. Stop by the Lower School to take a look!
