The Hackley archives is a treasure trove of interesting and fun facts about Hackley’s rich history. The archives is housed in the Hackley Alumni Association Room in Goodhue Memorial Hall and holds photographs, film, recordings, publications, yearbooks, trophies, documents, and memorabilia from 1899 - 2021.

Below are archival photos that might spark some fun memories. Alumni in the 50+ Club may remember the Clark Oval skating rink and Hilltop riding lessons; a few alumni might have even served dinner to Eleanor Roosevelt. Many alumni from the 1940s - 1980s probably used Gage Memorial Library as a quiet place to study. Our early 1990s alumni may have been in the audience when Barack Obama addressed the community as Hackley’s Forbes Lecturer. And alumni from the last 30 years may have found a creative outlet in the art room that was once the library. Clark Oval was once home to Hackley’s ice skating rink during the 20s, 30s, and early 40s, and the hockey team would hold their practices there.
According to former faculty member Mary Anne McNaughton, who lived on the Hilltop for more than 40 years, “In the late 60s, Clark Oval would flood and Randy and I would take our young children Billy ’79 and Margie ’85 ice skating in hand-me-down skates from Peggi Beussow, Art Teacher and Hackley resident.” Clark Oval was named for Royal A. Clark, Superintendent of Buildings &amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp; Grounds
Until the late 50s, students could take riding lessons on the Hilltop. Hackley’s stable and barn were located across from Clark Oval.
The barn burned down in the early 70s; in 2017, a faculty housing unit was constructed near where the barn once stood.
Eleanor Roosevelt ate dinner in the Hackley dining hall in the late 1940s. She was a delegate to the United Nations General Assembly and served as the first Chairperson of the Commission on Human Rights. Mrs. Roosevelt played an instrumental role in drafting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and championed civil rights and social activism. She visited Hackley while touring the area to promote the 30 Articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

The current Upper School art studio was once home to Gage Memorial Library named for Walter Boutwell Gage, Hackley’s sixth Headmaster from 1908 - 1939.
