Anna Sellon ’19 visits ISRP Students

On the eve of Thanksgiving break 2021, the Independent Science Research Program students were excited and grateful to welcome back former ISRP graduate Anna Sellon ’19 as a guest speaker. During her visit, Anna described her research and experiences working in two different labs.

One project is in the development of a biosensor and how it can be used to detect molecule-associated diseases such as Alzheimer’s. Her other lab project is understanding brain trauma by studying mouse models. One student found it interesting that “she was working to make tiny devices that could measure different aspects of human biology. I thought that it was fascinating how the fundamental chemical properties are exploited in order to measure certain biological substances in the human body.”

In addition to presenting some of the technical work she has completed, Anna also provided some words of wisdom regarding being open to new opportunities. As one student put it, “Oftentimes, people only think about the research that is going on in the lab but forget that lab culture itself can impact the way you work and your motivation.”

The students were impressed with how Anna has managed to balance two different lab projects while also pursuing a double major in Neuroscience and Environmental Science. We wish Anna the best of luck in her exams later this month and are excited to learn about her future research experiences.

Note: All alumni and parents with present or past experiences in scientific research have a standing invitation to visit the Independent Science Research Program. Our future scientists love hearing your stories, and these talks are formative to their careers. If you are interested, please reach out to Dr. Andrew Ying.
