Innocence Project speaker addresses the Upper School students

On January 25, the Upper School community heard from Mr. Johnny Hincapie, a criminal justice activist who educates the public about wrongful conviction.

Mr. Hincapie, who was invited to speak by history teacher Michael Bass as a part of his American Law curriculum, was wrongfully convicted in 1991 of robbery and felony murder on the basis of a coerced confession. The lead detective in the case was the same detective who had coerced confessions from the “Central Park Five” teenagers.

Mr. Bass had connected with Mr. Hincapie through the Innocence Project, an organization dedicated to exonerating the wrongfully convicted and to spreading awareness about issues in the criminal justice system.

Mr. Hincapie spoke powerfully about his experience and then engaged in questions and answers led by the American Law students, who inquired about the role of the media in his conviction and what kind of reforms he believes would address these kinds of injustices. Mr. Hincapie concluded his talk by encouraging Hackley students to work to make a difference in the world.
