Hackley MS Debate Team Scores 'Most Total Wins' in Hilltop Tournament

On Saturday, Dec. 3, Hackley hosted the second tournament of the season for the New York Debate League. Debate topics included whether to eliminate high school football, does Amazon do more harm than good, and the benefits of the rise of the telehealth industry.

Hackley entered 10 teams for a total of 29 students, and overall, the squad went 24-16 — strong enough for the most total wins and third place for the highest percentage of wins in the tournament. Every team earned a win, and our 7th grade team of Emerson P. and Evelyn W. came in first place in the Novice Division as the sole undefeated team in the tournament.

Hackley also had multiple top speakers, including 8th graders Theodore A., Owen S., Max M., Jonah G., Nico K., and Lila S., who was the top Hackley speaker of the day.

Several teams moved up to the Varsity division from Novice, and they more than held their own with 2-2 records. Overall, it was a very successful tournament, building on the success of our November event.

A huge thanks to our US debate judges, including Phoebe Abrahms '24, Vivek Malik '25, Angela Croce '25, Nina Zeltser '25, Arjun Virk '25, Ben Iaderosa '26, and Arushi Chandra '23 for all their help.

The next tournament is Saturday, Jan. 21 at the Tuckahoe Middle School in Westchester.
