Hackley Community Kicks Off Academic Year at Convocation 2023

On Thursday, Sept. 7, the Hackley community came together at Convocation 2023 and formally launched the academic year with welcome notes from Associate Head of School Dr. Cyndy Jean, Community Council President EJ Regalado ’24, Board of Trustees President Dr. Harvinder Sandhu and Head of School Charles Franklin.

EJ centered her message on community and finding ways to help others. “My ask of you for this school year is simple: Be there and be kind. Whether it’s to your friends, your teachers or even people that you’ve just met,” she said.

In introducing Mr. Franklin, Dr. Sandhu discussed the importance of the role of the Head of School. “The Head of School is the most important job at Hackley, and the most important job for the Board of Trustees, which I represent, is finding that right person. And we could not be more thrilled with the person who is going to be leading our School,” Dr. Sandhu noted before presenting Mr. Franklin with the graduation plaque for the Class of 1899-1900 — Hackley’s first graduating class — which was saved from the 2017 Goodhue Fire and restored by renowned local woodworker Eric Clingen.

In his speech, Mr. Franklin expressed his “tremendous sense of gratitude” for everyone throughout Hackley’s history who has helped to shape the School. “I’m looking forward to getting to know each and every one of you as the school year progresses and learning about your Hackley experience,” he told the crowd.
