Community Art Projects

Sarah Coble reports on her work on two Community Art Projects in Westchester County.
This summer Sarah Coble worked on two community art projects; a large scale steel sculpture for the Mamaroneck Ave railroad bridge and a mosaic fountain, benches and a totem pole for a community garden in New Rochelle. An artist friend invited her to meet with the mayor to discuss ideas to improve the looks of the bridge. “At first I was intimidated by the size of the project but was intrigued by the creative problem at hand. The 40 foot flag banner will be painted on a curved piece of steel. The 12’ osprey will have curved wings and will be seen in silhouette above the bridge. The multi part relief sculpture will be lit at night. The flag banner reflects the history or the village, the shape was inspired by a historic photo of the bridge decorated with bunting, while the osprey and blue fish symbolize the community’s pride its harbor and park.” Sarah was also thrilled to design a communal meeting place within a community garden in New Rochelle. Inspired by the mosaic benches of Pedro Silva at Grant’s Tomb, NYC, she has been making models of a mosaic fountain, drinking fountain benches and a totem pole rain catcher. Sarah noted, “The boys and girls club and community groups will help to fabricate mosaics for these pieces. I look forward to working with my sculpture students on these projects as they progress.”
