Gillian Casten ’04 and her new business venture, RateYourBurn, were recently featured on Bloomberg TV. Gillian left her job in private equity at Fortress Investment Group to build a business combining her interests in fitness and database management. RateYourBurn.com, launching in 2012, is a platform where fitness instructors and personal trainers are treated as ratable business entities. In an industry where the typical transaction is shifting from a "pay per month" to a "pay per class" model, the customer experience is likewise becoming dependent on the teacher, not just the gym. RateYourBurn’s database links instructors across the US to the gyms and studios where they teach, rolling up each class rating to both the teacher and the institution. Currently, the blog covers New York and Boston.
