Athletes of the Week – Week of Oct. 23
Every week, the Athletics department highlights some exceptional Hackley Hornets who are helping to spur on their teams.
Girls’ Varsity Soccer: Gemma Lasky ’27
Gemma had her first Hackley goals in a shutout win against Riverdale. She contributed to all three goals scored in that game (two goals and one assist). Playing the center midfield position, Gemma has controlled the tempo of our games and has generated a number of offensive opportunities.
Varsity Football: Sami Khatib ’24
Sami has been instrumental to the team's success this season. Most recently at Alumni Day, Sami had five quarterback pressures, four tackles and blocked a punt for a touchdown to defeat rival Fieldston 10-6.
Varsity Cross Country: Travis Knaggs ’24
This senior leader ran an incredible race last Friday at the Collegiate Invitational. He placed 9th overall with an incredibly fast 17:51 5k, despite frigid and rainy conditions. The boys’ team won the meet for the second consecutive year in a row, in large part due to Travis’s monster race. With this win, the Hackley boys’ team goes into the upcoming championship meets with terrific momentum. Congratulations, Travis!
Varsity Cross Country: Elizabeth S. ’28
This first-year varsity runner ran the race of her life last Friday at the Collegiate Invitational. The muddy course and frigid rain did not slow Elizabeth down, as she covered the 5k course in 22:26. This incredible performance placed Elizabeth 10th overall and second for Hackley. Her 10th place finish was a major reason why the girls’ team out-placed Marymount by a single point, earning them second place overall in the varsity race. Congratulations, Elizabeth!
Girls’ Varsity Tennis: Bella Barriera ’25
Bella stepped up majorly in the Ivy League tennis tournament this past week. After dropping matches to both Riverdale and Horace Mann during the regular season, she avenged those losses by defeating those very same opponents when it mattered most — in the semis and the finals of the Ivy tournament. Bella’s poise, resilience, confidence, refusal to give up and smart play were decisive as Hackley defeated Riverdale in the semis 3-2 and then Horace Mann by the same score in the finals on the Hornets’ way to their fourth consecutive Ivy League title. A huge congrats to our No. 2 singles player.
Boys’ Varsity Soccer: Jasper Lee ’24
Jasper scored a dramatic upper corner goal late in the second half of the Hornets’ game against Collegiate to secure a 1-0 win. Jasper has been a stalwart on the soccer field this year and part of team that faced many obstacles.
