Sumo-Bot Tournament at Hackley

On January 27, four schools (Hackley, Long Ridge, GCDS and Greenwich Academy) brought a total of 24 lego ‘sumo-bots’ to Allen Memorial Hall to participate in the first Independent School Sumo-Bot League tournament. Students have been working on their robots since the start of the year, where each robot was required to push another opponent robot out of a battle zone. Read on...
There were two separate competitions at the tournament. The first competition required students had to write programs to make their robots to autonomously detect their opponents and push them out of the zones. The second competition allowed students to control their robots remotely using iPads.

The tournament was a big success, with students frantically and repeatedly re-engineering and re-programming their robots. Everyone was looking at each other’s creations for inspiration and we hope in the future to all meet again to battle once more with new and improved sumo-bots. Hackley performed well in the competition, with 1 robot making the final four of the autonomous competition and three robots making the final four of the remote control competition. Fifth and sixth grade students who participated were Travis K, Aniketh A, Philip M, Matthew G, Tyler M, Arjun V, Jad B, Wenjia Q, Cydnee C and Tyler G.

Thanks to Dan Lipin, Katherine Hannon, Cyndy Jean, Steve Bileca, B&G, and teachers from the participating schools for their support with the organization of this tournament.
