Dr. Robert Kelly (P ’23) virtually visits ISRP

The Independent Research Program was lucky to host Dr. Robert Kelly (P ’23) for a virtual visit on Wednesday April 15, 2020.

After a discussion of Dr. Kelly’s fascinating path from studying Physics at Caltech, to completing his MD in Sweden, to becoming an Assistant Professor at Weill Cornell Medical Center, Dr. Kelly gave our students tips and methods to conduct replication studies of scientific research. Such studies are becoming increasingly important to confirm results from others, as well as provide a unique opportunity for students to learn valuable research techniques.

One of our students reflected that “Dr. Kelly’s presentation on the path of his scientific career starting in physics, engineering and ending in psychiatry is a singularly exceptional journey. His unconventional path proves to me that there are opportunities for people to pursue a path with multiple entirely different experiences and one I should keep in mind when I plan my career in the future. Also, his talk on pursuing a unique topic of research as an injection point into a new field of research was very interesting. It is advice that I will cherish when pursuing new topics of research in the future.” We thank Dr. Kelly for taking the time to put together such a thoughtful presentation and to speak to our students.

All alumni/parents with present or past experiences in scientific research have a standing invitation to back and visit the Independent Research Program. Our future scientists love hearing your stories, and these talks are formative to their careers. If you are interested, please reach out to Dr. Andrew Ying (aying@hackleyschool.org).
