Seniors of the Week: 10/16/20

The Athletics department celebrates the Class of 2021 through a Seniors of the Week series honoring Hackley’s graduating athletes.

David Bernstein '21 - Cross Country
David Joined cross country this year as a senior. With his amazing attitude and great work ethic, he quickly earned the respect of veteran runners. David has persevered and completed his first 5K on the track, and demonstrates a dedicated routine to training on the track, trails and roads. We have all witnessed his sprint to the finish and hope we see him back for a track season before he graduates.

Mason Chapman '21 - Cross Country
Mason has been a member of the XC team for four years, and he has been truly excelling his final year with the team. His optimism is genuine and sincere, he works harder than ever during workouts, and he is extraordinarily supportive of his teammates. Mason’s approach this year has earned him the well-deserved title, “leader”.

Winslow Griffen '21 - Cross Country
Winslow has been with the program his entire US tenure. Despite entering the program with a historic group of teammates, Winslow never struggled to distinguish himself. He has naturally and confidently taken on the role of an empathetic and charismatic leader.

Samson Bennett '21 - Boys’ Soccer (Captain)
Samson is a four-year varsity player and at the core of a stalwart defensive back-line. He has brought big competitive spirit, energy, passion, skill and a physical presence to the Hackley defense. His exceptional free kicks and service up to the forwards is a trademark of his play, and has led to many a Hackley goal.

Nicholas Khoo '21 - Boys’ Soccer
Nick joined the varsity as a sophomore and is an important part of the team’s success. His deft touch, crafty moves and clean passes in the midfield have helped drive the Hornet offense, while his strong work ethic and responsible play have been important in keeping the team’s defensive shape. Soft spoken but with a big game, Nick has been a wonderful teammate and contributor.

Jordan Johnson '21 - Football (Captain)
Johnson has been a starter for the Hornets football team since his freshman year.  He has grown to be one of the most dominant athletes in the league.  Even more noteworthy, is Johnson being recognized as a team captain as junior and senior.  He embodies all the goals of our student-athletes; driven, competitive, compassionate, and intelligent.

Chapman “Chappy” Jones '21 - Football
Chappy made the unique leap from cross country to football and has become an invaluable asset to the Hackley Football Family.  He started as an offensive tackle as a junior and helped the Hornets become the most dominant run offense in the league in 2019.  Jones was slated to return to anchor the line for the 2020 campaign.

Kiara “Kiki” Abbey '21 - Girls’ Soccer
Kiki has been a member of the upper school girls soccer program all four years of her upper school career. Making her goal scoring debut in a tight battle against Dalton her junior year when Kiki’s strength and explosiveness of speed proved too much for the opponents defense.  Kiki’s continual drive to become the best player she can be is inspiring to her peers and coaches alike.

Isabele “Izzy” Francis '21 - Field Hockey
Izzy has been a committed, hard-working four year member of the field hockey program.  Izzy is someone who has a quiet strength--she is always where she needs to be on the field and is always working incredibly hard in both practices and games, and that hard work has certainly paid off.  She has come into this season with that same dedication and commitment.  Izzy leads by example, especially in terms of her loyalty and kindness.  She has been an amazing role model for her teammates, especially the younger players, and we are so lucky to have her on the team.

Samantha Albright '21 - Girls’ Tennis
Sam has been a part of the tennis program for four years and is enjoying a great first season on varsity! She has a consistent baseline game, but it is her aggressive net play and ability to end points with her volleys and overheads that really stand out.  Furthermore, Sam’s energy and smile, combined with her great competitive spirit, bring so much to each practice, whether doing drills or playing “touch the fence.” She is a fantastic and supportive teammate!
