Athletes of the Week – Week of Feb. 5

Every week, the Athletics department highlights some exceptional Hackley Hornets who are helping to spur on their teams.

Wrestling: Grant Berhalter ’24
Grant had the best tournament of his career thus far, winning the Ivy League Championship in Wrestling.  As the 4th seed, Grant had to beat two wrestlers he previously lost to in order to bring home the top prize.
 
Girls’ Basketball: Enya Walsh ’24
Enya scored seven points and had six rebounds in a win against Poly Prep. All points were from the foul line. She also scored 17 points and had 10 rebounds (double/double) in the Hornets’ game versus Grace Church. This included the game-tying foul shot with five seconds to go. The Hornets went on to win in overtime 71 to 66!

Boys’ Basketball: Jake Hendelman ’24
Jake was the key contributor in a 71-66 overtime win against rival Fieldston this past week. With just under two minutes left in the overtime period, Jake’s four-point play (three-pointer plus one) sealed the victory for the Hornets. His career high 23 points was vital to the team’s success.

Girls’ Squash: Skylar van Eck ’26
Skylar has been on point this entire season, dropping just one game and going 13-0 for the Hornets sitting in the No. 1 spot. Her tenacious play has been vital to the team’s undefeated season.

Indoor Track & Field: Baraka Middleton ’24
Baraka had the indoor meet of his life this past Monday at the Varsity Classic. He began the evening running the fastest 55-meter hurdles of his life, placing 17th among 67 runners with a time of 8.39 seconds. Next, he placed 67th of 222 runners in the 200m with a time of 24.21 seconds. Lastly, he capped off his night as Hackley’s top long jumper, soaring a distance of 19-03.25. Congratulations on a monster meet, Baraka!

Indoor Track & Field: Rafael Castro ’25
Rafael had a breakout race this past Monday at the Varsity Classic in the 3200m. He went out fast, stayed relaxed and made a huge move the second half of the race to solidify his monster performance. He earned 12th place overall in a field of some of the best runners in New York and New Jersey. His overall time of 10:01 was nearly 30 seconds faster than his previous best.
 
Indoor Track & Field: Leah Hollingsworth ’27
Leah leveled up this past Monday at the Varsity Classic. She began the evening placing 30th out of 136 runners in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.78 seconds. Next, she placed 42nd in a field of 199 runners in the 200 meter with a time of 27.77 seconds. In both events, she was able to shatter her previous personal records. The Track and Field future is bright for this promising freshman!
