Hackley Parent Dr. Alex McLawhorn Visits with ISRP Students

On Tuesday Dr. Alex McLawhorn P ’33, ’35 visited with Independent Science Research Program students to discuss the experiences that led him to his current position as the director of research and innovation at the Hospital for Special Surgery.

In his current role, Dr. McLawhorn gets to review all the research protocols for every study that is proposed at the hospital. He described studies that he was a part of that have had real-world impacts for patients and doctors.

One student commented, “I appreciated how he splits his time performing actual surgeries, managing and conducting research. It made me more interested in potentially pursuing this kind of career — splitting time between research, practicing and data analysis work.”

While he enjoys the research side of his work, it was obvious that Dr. McLawhorn truly loves being in the surgery room and working as a team to help patients.

Another student commented, “When he said he enjoys going into work on surgery days, I think that demonstrated the passion he holds for his work.”
