Assistant Director of the Lower School

Hackley Lower School, a K-4 division serving approximately 210 students on a 285-acre campus, seeks an Assistant Director of the Lower School for the 2024-2025 school year.

Summary of Responsibilities
The Assistant Director of the Lower School shares responsibility for leading and supporting efforts to nurture a positive and healthy student and faculty culture and a sense of community in the Lower School. The Assistant Director helps oversee the academic program and student life, monitoring, guiding, and advocating for the academic and emotional well-being of Lower School students. The Assistant Director of the Lower School also serves as the Director of the Extended Day program.

Reporting Structure
The Assistant Director of the Lower School reports to the Director of the Lower School, while helping supervise divisional faculty and the Lower School Administrative Assistant.

Specific Responsibilities
The Assistant Director’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Operation of the Lower School
  • Serve as the point person on communication with teachers and families about disciplinary matters and as support for disciplinary challenges by documenting, guiding and following up as necessary
  • Serve as the Director of Extended Day, overseeing the care of approximately 100 K-4 students, hiring, supporting and supervising approximately 40 colleagues teaching after school clubs, homework lab, and play group
  • Help lead daily operations of Lower School, including scheduling, budget management, etc.
  • Assist with internal and external communications
  • Schedule faculty duties and substitutes
  • Assist Director in planning faculty meetings, Hackley Parent Association Coffees, and
    general communication
  • Support committee chairs in ensuring completion of committee work and its
    implementation across the K-4 community
  • Seek, pursue and implement professional development opportunities
  • Act as Director if and when required in the Director’s absence
  • Participate in hiring and training of new faculty and staff

Academic Program
  • Serve as an academic leader, supporting the Director and all faculty in ensuring curricular coordination between grade levels and Middle School
  • Support teachers in implementing curriculum, pedagogical shifts, and differentiation
  • Review and analyze grade reports and teacher comments
  • Organize and analyze standardized testing (e.g. ERB’s)
  • Serve as member of the Hackley K-12 Academic Committee

Student Life

  • Schedule, attend and lead select conferences regarding students of concern
  • Consult with individual faculty members and families about student social/emotional issues, discipline, and academic performance
  • Plan and coordinate assemblies and field trips
  • Plan and implement Community Time activities, special days and events
  • Organize and attend school functions (e.g. Curriculum Night, Family Conferences, admissions events)
  • Serve as a member of the Lower School Admissions Committee

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have:
  • A minimum of five years’ experience in Lower School teaching
  • A Master’s degree in school leadership or related field preferred
  • Proven administrative and/or supervisory experience (3-5 years preferred)
  • A passion for and experience working with Lower School students, teachers and families
  • Core knowledge of research-based practices for effective learning for Lower School students and an understanding of their developmental characteristics and social-emotional development
  • Ability to identify challenges and make recommendations for improvement
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Collaborative style with commitment to high ethical standards
  • An interest in and commitment to fully engaging in the Hackley community
  • Highly effective organizational, planning, and interpersonal skills; knowledge of Veracross, Google Suite, etc.
  • Ability to maintain a professional and respectful relationship with all constituencies; willingness to listen, share ideas, think critically and grow professionally
  • Ability to give and receive feedback with grace and humility
  • Flexibility, kindness, open-mindedness, and sense of humor

Salary and Benefits:
The salary range for this 12-month administrative position is $110,000 to $130,000.
