Five Lower School Teachers Earn Science of Reading Microcredential

Kristen Adams and Elizabeth Richmond in kindergarten, Nicole DeNino and Rachel Mwakitawa in first grade, and Literacy Curriculum Coordinator and Specialist Shannon MacDonald recently received the Microcredential in Science of Reading Fundamentals (SoRF MC) from SUNY New Paltz.

The SoRF MC covers the five pillars of the Science of Reading — phonemic awareness; phonics, including alphabetic principle and orthography; fluency; vocabulary; and comprehension.

All five teachers already possess extensive training in Orton-Gillingham and multiple multi-sensory phonics programs and approaches, and their coursework at SUNY reaffirmed the Lower School’s commitment to delivering high-quality and research-based literacy instruction.
